The new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer was recently released. Those who are fans of superhero movies or of the spider-empowered man in particular are going to be especially interested in this film. There are a lot of people out there that really love Spider-Man, and this movie is a chance for them to see their favorite superhero go toe-to-toe against a new villain, The Vulture.
But this isn’t Marvel’s first attempt to make a Spider-Man film. OR the second. It’s the third attempt in the past 15 years to make a successful Spider-Man franchise. The first one with Tobey Maguire lasted for three films before it stopped. The next one with Andrew Garfield lasted only 2 before it was deemed not-so-good by critics and the producers pulled the plug on Garfield as Spider-Man.
The New Spider-Man Movie
No Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield
This film doesn’t feature either of the previous Spider-Man actors, obviously. Instead, it stars Tom Holland, a British actor who has already played the new Spider-Man in the recent release of Captain America: Civil War. There are a lot of comic-book fans that are really excited at another chance for Marvel to portray the character. I was a fan of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, but I was also particularly young.
A Part of The Avengers
One thing that will make this version of Spider-Man better is that he has the supporting cast of The Avengers characters, which have already been established as a tremendously successful film franchise. Spider-Man: Homecoming is going to star Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, or the Iron Man, opposite of Spider-Man. He’s going to be a father-figure/mentor for the young Spider-Man, who’s just starting to figure out what it means to be a superhero.
Robert Downey Jr.
The Iron Man film franchise already got 3 solo films, along with a role in each of The Avengers and the latest Captain America film. RDJ has officially become one of the most successful superhero runs, and he’s starting to give Hugh Jackman a run who has his own role as The Wolverine character in the X-Men films. Having Tony Stark in this Spider-Man film is going to help Tom Holland from having to carry the film all on his own.
A New Villain
At first glance upon the trailer, it seems that The Green Goblin has returned as the villain of another Spider-Man film. But checking the IMDB page for the movie shows that it’s not The Green Goblin at all, but another villain called The Vulture. It would be easy to get the two mixed up, as they both fly around and have a similar mask. But a little investigation into the Marvel archives reveals that it is, in fact, not the same guy.
Tired of New Spider-Mans
If you’re like me, then you’re tired of new Spider-Mans. I’m not saying I’m not excited about this movie, or Tom Holland’s character in general, but I am tired of having to get used to new Spider-Man characters over and over again. If we’re lucky, this will be the last time for a while that we have to get used to a completely different Spider-Man character.
Tom Holland has already been in Captain America: Civil War, so fans have already seen him to some capacity take on the role of Spider-Man. Those that were wanting to more movies of the spider-inspired superhero will certainly get their wish as time goes on. For now, it will be interesting to see how Homecoming does when it gets released. The one thing that’s certain is that 2017 is going to be a prime year for superhero movies in the box office.
